Lot description:

PHRYGIA. Apameia. 2nd-1st century BC. AE (Bronze, 17 mm, 5.35 g, 2 h). Laureate head of Apollo to right. Rev. AΠAMEΩN between two flutes; all within oak wreath. RPC I 3124 (as 'Augustus?'). SNG von Aulock 3485 (as 'Augustus'). Very fine.

RPC carefully notes that 'The dating of the coin and the identification of the portrait as Augustus are extremely uncertain', unquestionably rightly so. The coin is most likely earlier and was struck in the late pre-imperial time.

Starting Price: 25 CHF
